Did You Know: Earth Used to Have Two Moons

Posted on the 10 July 2013 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

When I see planets with two suns and moons in sci-fi movies, I used to wonder how it would really look like if we have two suns or moons  around the Earth. Well, I’m not gonna like having two Suns because the Earth is hot enough already, but two moons would be one beautiful sigh to see. Actually, you may not know that the Earth did used to have two moons, until the two collided, forming just one moon.

Researchers recently revealed this new theory that believes that Earth had two moons. And, millions of years ago the two moons merged in a “slow-motion collision” that took hours to complete. They believe that the collision may have happened at a very slow speed because the two moons were on the same orbit, According to Nature.com.

“The second moon would have lasted for only a few million years; then it would have collided with the moon to leave the one large body we see today,” said Professor Erik Asphaug from this research team, “It would have orbited Earth at the same speed and distance and just got slowly sucked in until they hit and then coalesced.” (as seen on The Telegraph)

This theory is still under debate. But, it’s not really an impossible thing to believe since most of the planets in our solar system have more than one moon. Although, NASA’s GRAIL mission is expected to help us figure out what really happened.
