There’s a little place in my musical heart for the rock scene of South Africa. A somewhat unlikely hotbed of indie creativity, South Africa is home to artists who combine the sounds of their homeland with dug in basslines and high pitched guitar riffs on repeat. A mainstay in this burgeoning scene is the fun-loving loving fellas of Desmond & the Tutus. They’re in the process of releasing their third album, Express Yourself, in a three part wave. Among this first set of songs is the party-starting, cowbell-infused single, “Tearing Up (Big Guns)”, thats sees the group nail down a distinctive melody amongst their inviting and flavorful sound. With a bit more weight than previous songs, “Tearing Up (Big Guns)” has the same vocals that sit comfortably between sung and spoken, ripping guitar lines and hints of African percussion.
