Denver trash and recycling department started a pilot composting program 5 years ago. In 2014 they are expanding that program to a much larger area in Denver. I am very happy to say that my neighborhood is in the area that can start participating in the composting program. We previously composted in our backyard but stopped in order to make sure our pile was nice and low when we move out of the property at the end of next summer. Since we stopped composting our weekly trash bag has been noticeable heavier and fuller. I am really excited to reduce our waste going to the dump, especially since reducing my consumption and waste is a constant battle I face.
The program does cost money, around $10 a month, but to me this is a cost worth paying. Being as sustainable as possible is very important to me. The program give us a large receptacle bin similar to the recycling bin plus a smaller pail to keep in the kitchen. It also picks up the compost weekly, which will be key in the summer when higher temperatures can really make food scraps smell.
If you live in Denver and are interested in the program check out their website to see if your address is within the expanded area. If your address does not fall into the category they also offer backyard composting classes that you could attend and compost on your own. Either way you get to reduce your trash bag and be more sustainable.
