With the release of their 5th album, Negativity, Deer Tick have garnered quite a following. Led by singer John McCauley, the album reflects his tormented core and the tautness of this 5 piece band. Deer Tick’s raw emotion was evident during this intimate concert in the Allen Room overlooking Columbus Circleand Central Park.
A heart wrenching performance of “Big House”, which McCauley stated was not a song he particularly enjoyed playing as it tells the tale of heroin abuse, was an emotional highlight of the evening, bringing the crowd to an awe inspired silence (yes, even the ‘trying too hard to be hip’ hipster that was constantly shouting out nothings to the band). Another poignant moment was when he brought out his wife of 3 months to sing their duet “In Our Time” together. A little trivia — Stevie Nicks officiated at their wedding in December.
With McCauley’s raspy, appealing vocals and the tightness of the band, Deer Tick have proven time and again what it means to be part of something bigger than the sum of the individuals.
