Decorating a Bathroom for Children

By Therealsupermum @TheRealSupermum

In a bathroom that is entirely dedicated for use by children there is a lot that can be done design wise to make it a fun and yet relaxing space. And if you’re wondering whether decorating for children is a waste of time and money, don’t worry; even though the kids will grow up, your bathroom can grow along with them and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to keep up either.

With faucetry in a children’s bathroom there is no need to add splendid styles and way out surfaces. Taps for children can be a point of frustration so be sure to select basic, easy to use sets and move on to more fun areas to transform.

Decorating a Bathroom for Children

Take the walls and floors for example. There is nothing more fun than the primary colors that all kids love, and seeing them splashed around the bathroom in various ways will help generate a sense of freedom and joy in the room. As your children mature it’s easy, not to mention low cost, to paint over a bright yellow wall with a softer tone – edging all the way back to ivory by the time they’ve reached adulthood. By duplicating this approach with bath sheets, foot mats and face washers the bathroom really will ‘grow up’ right along side the kids.

There are a lot of fantastic bathroom accessory sets that are specially designed for children. Whether it is their favorite super hero or a happy puppy design, the children will enjoy seeing their toothbrushes in such wonderful containers. Add a splash of ‘temporary’ color to a traditional all-white vanity unit by changing the door and drawer handles.

Safety always comes first in any case, but more so with children around slippery surfaces and above all, water. Rubber backed bath mats that are big enough to soak up all those joyful splashes will ensure little ones don’t end up slipping on wet floors or slippery mats.

Allowing children to reach taps on the hand basin is fantastic for their growing independence, however, be sure to not enable them to access hot taps at an age where they do not understand the risks associated with hot water. Add a colorful step stool to the room to help make hand washing easier for those bigger kids who are ready and able to wash their hands all on their own. Step stools with rubber on the top and bottom are a perfect choice as they help avoid slips and trips.

For a dash of extra fun, add bright hooks to hang towels, face washers and all manner of things at child friendly heights around the room. Bright towels embroidered with the children’s names on them helps them learn how to read and write their names and gives them a sense of ownership and pride in their bathroom and its accessories.

Of course there is no reason why you can’t completely remodel the children’s bathroom with pint sized toilets, vanity units and chairs, just remember that as the children grow up so too will the bathroom need to and that will take time and money. Either way, decorating a bathroom for children really is worth the effort as it will create many joyful moments during those precious childhood years and those moments are something you and the children will cherish forever.
