Dear New Yorkers: It’s May, Stop Wearing Puffer Coats

To put it bluntly, New Yorkers have no idea how not to do the most. Either they're breaking out the sandals when it's anything above 50 degrees or they're wearing a down jacket when it's 60 plus degrees out. The premature sandals are just plain stupid, but people dedicated to their winter outwear when the temperature no longer calls for it is my biggest pet peeve.

In case you care, the last time I broke out my full blown down jacket was early March. I graduated to lighter wool coats and eventually to leather and denim. On days when there is a bit of a chill in the air, I either suffer through it or wear thicker layers. Not once has the thought of a puffer coat even crossed my mind.

For the first time in a long time, we've had what I would define as a real spring. Everyday is not super warm, but the weather has consistently stayed in the 60s and 70s with the occasional dip to the mid to high 50s or spike into the 80s. So, that is why this year I am particularly bothered by this puffer phenomenon.

THERE. IS. NO. NEED.

I know every body handles temperatures differently. That being said, I am on the side of the people that are usually cold. It has to be downright hot for me to be out here frolicking in these street without a jacket. So, I am not telling you to throw caution to the wind and not wear any sort of cold protection. There are levels to this though.

I personally ditch the puffer in anything over 45 degrees, but can accept people wearing it when the temps are in the low 50s. Once I see people on the super hot subway platform wearing their down jacket and uggs (true story) on a 75 degree day - that is wear I draw a line.

Long story short - puffer szn O-V-E-R. We've been in leather/denim season for while now. Join the party. Next time you want to go for the puffer. Check the darn weather!
