Birmingham, Alabama’s Dead Fingers released an album over the summer that you’re going to want to hear, especially if you’re a fan of bands like Shovels & Rope and Dr. Dog. The husband/wife duo had a baby girl in the midst of recording Big Black Dog so there’s an undeniable sweetness embedded in the tracks. Their rich harmonies are at times reminiscent of Fleet Foxes, mainly due to the powder soft warmth in Kate’s voice, while Taylor’s vocals are sometimes similar to Conor Oberst. The project originally formed around Taylor’s work, but as the couple began playing together more frequently, it became apparent that Dead Fingers was the way to go. Their sound touches on Southern-leaning genres, sometimes with a bit more twang than others, and dances from folk to Americana to country. These days to stand out in such a traditional genre, there has to be a nontraditional element. Dead Fingers nail it with their dead-on harmonies and undeniable melodies that feel more referential than intrinsic, and which allows the duo to toy with their sound as they will.
