DE Stephon Tuitt moving up depth chart at Steelers training camp
Pittsburgh Steelers' Stephon Tuitt is a five technique defensive end who's still learning the game, but offers a very high upside that has him working with the first team defense.
Tuitt (6-foot-5, 299) has a good opportunity to start in the first game of his rookie season. He made 28 starts for Notre Dame, racking up 25 career tackles for loss, 21.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles.
After gaining too much weight in 2013, Tuitt trimmed down for the NFL Combine and pre-draft visits, upping his stock before the draft. The Steelers selected Tuitt with the No. 46 overall pick in the 2014 draft.
Tuitt practicing with the first team at the team's training camp has shown that he can handle the jump in competition.
He has been compared to the likes of former New England Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour; however, he knows he has a long road ahead before he can reach that level.
“I believe I can be the best defensive lineman in this league. I can, I do and I believe that,” Tuitt said, via Alan Robinson of Tribelive.com.
“But everything will come only with hard work and coach (John) Mitchell's training.”
“Size, speed, technique,” said Tuitt. “I'd probably say sometimes the talent doesn't even win, it's technique that wins.”
“He's shown us a lot of athleticism for a big guy and he's in great shape. He can run all day,” defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said. “He's pretty highly motivated.”
