Shedding a glimmering light on slacker pop, Day Wave’s debut single “Nothing at All” is delightfully airy and surprisingly candid. There’s something special about the way Jackson Phillips (aka Day Wave) brightens up his fight against apathy with gentle surf guitar and waves of “ooh’s” and “ahh’s.” Soaring synths, a peppy drum beat, repetitive guitar riffs and mellow vocals meld into a hypnotizing sound turned from listless to lackadaisical by Phillips’ full lyrical dedication to angsty indifference. Though the song revolves around Phillips questioning, “What am I good for?,” it’s pretty clear that he’s more than good at crafting smooth and sweetly energetic pop songs. Day Wave’s debut EP will be out in early 2015.
