wtr 2.12.13 620x207 DARWIN DEEZ, THE LITTLE ONES, FOALS

Another excellent release week is upon us! There’s a little something for everyone here, ranging from fun to cerebral and from guitar-based to beat-fueled. However diverse, all of them are excellent and anxious to be heard. Listen up!

FOALS – HOLY FIRE

For those of you who like your math rock served with gusto, Foals’ third release is one you need to hear. It’s more of the stadium-worthy rock that we expect from them, meant to be played at ear-splitting volumes. Holy Fire is both more expansive and a bit more anthemic than Total Life Forever and competely danceable/head bang worthy.

MILLIONYOUNG – VARIABLE

This week, chillwave darling, Mike Diaz, is unleashing a total dancefest into the world. The title track is bulging with synth sweetness, lacking only bodies and a disco ball to get the party going. Millionyoung presents a textured sound, promising for an interesting listening experience should you actually be able to sit yourself down long enough to properly do so. This record could be sold in stores as “instant party.” For real, beat heads, check this one out.

DARWIN DEEZ – SONGS FOR IMAGINATIVE PEOPLE

After three years, one of the quirkiest dudes of pop is back with all new material. Darwin Deez’s album is more of the same imaginative, kooky freak folk, heavy on the hooks and heavy on the happy. Deez makes weird work for him, but, if you ask me, weird is an illusion — interesting is a much better term. But hey, let’s tuck the philosophizing away and dance to some Songs for Imaginative People. This album is way too much fun.

THE LITTLE ONES – THE DAWN SANG ALONG

And they’re back! After almost five years of silence from the LA pop outfit, The Little Ones are returning to the scene with a delicious new record full of shiny melodies and breezy hooks. The Dawn Sang Along was worth the wait because it’s exactly what we need right now. Over winter? Get into this record ASAP.

VERONICA FALLS – WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN

These UK graveyard pop-rockers are back with their sophomore release, a work that’s dark and brooding, yet undeniably infectious. Veronica Falls is sweet in a Nightmare Before Christmas sort of way. I adore their bubblegum noir for its lo-fi laced sweet harmonies, jangly guitar rhythms, and endearing macabre romanticism. This release is a bit brighter than the first and definitely a must listen.
