Southern California’s new indie rock sextet formed in 2014 and have started strong in 2015 with the release of this warm track. Describing their own sound as being “a blend of 1980s post-punk and their undying love for Prince,” their music pulls staple elements of past decades into classic sound with modern appeal along the lines of HAIM and The Preatures. Expertly executing a time-worn formula, the single’s tender melody rides along a pronounced bassline and interlocking layers of electric guitar. Underneath the sunny sonics of “Cry for Me”, the band are actually speaking through the struggles of a deceitful relationship and the inevitable goodbye. It’s a sure sign of something good when a band can make you dance through heartbreak. We can’t wait for more from HUNNY.
