Everything about Dan Croll’s debut album is simple and straightforward, but it’s the execution and delivery of what’s presented that makes Sweet Disarray such a joy to listen to. It has a bright, unapologetic presence that blends together a variety of different ideas, but rather than blindly throw everything he can think of at the wall in hopes of it sticking, he’s carefully considered and tactfully applied the contents of his audible toy box. Wirey and sharp guitar notes cut against soft pastel keys and clean crisp percussion slices in between sparkly synth patterns that alternate between a retrospective and futuristic sound. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also some fine-tuned brass and string thrown in at times. All of this sits together and intersects nicely — this particular pudding never comes across as over-egged or drastically restrained, and instead glides with ease between stripped down and layered compositions.

With the average track lasting three minutes on the nose, Croll is quite literally in, then out, then on his way. Despite being short and sweet, the majority of songs on display here not only offer up an eclectic sprinkling of indie pop with various degrees in the instrumental department, but Sweet Disarray launches a number of infectious, melodic ear worms towards the listener in the process. “In/Out”, “Maway” and “Only Ghost” are all perfect examples of songs that not only strike with immediacy but also echo inside your head long after they’ve stopped. A lot of the vocal deliveries on the album (much like the record as a whole) also come with the added bonus of being sweet, uplifting and utterly charming, giving both the album and the man himself a bold and lovable presence.

As good as Sweet Disarray is, there’s still some chiseling and tweaking to be done. Croll’s first outing sees him peeking over at the inside of greatness from the outside. With time, experience and more of the technical prowess and imaginative direction shown so far, there really is nothing stopping him from knocking down the walls that stand before him.

If you’re looking for a conquering troubadour in the making, then look no further — Sweet Disarray is what you should be spiking, and Dan Croll is a name you should be etching into your memory.
