ABOUT CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE:
Find the fortune, break the curse!
The hunt is on for an ancient treasure tied to nine-year-old J.B.’s family history. He’s been having visions that make him sweaty, lightheaded, and certain he’s turning into some kind of freak -- or worse, going insane. But things are worse than he imagined. The visions stem from a family curse. An ancient ancestor was accused of stealing the massive Granville fortune, and now J.B.’s entire family will suffer.
To break the curse, J.B. must find and return the Granvilles’ stolen property. But he’s not the only one searching for the treasure. As he sets out on his journey through a dark and foreboding forest, he’ll battle his worst fears and fight terrifying creatures along the way. And when he meets two others who share the missing pieces of his visions and suffer from the same curse, the three soon realize they need to work together to break the curse before it’s too late.
GUEST POST BY KELLY HASHWAY, AUTHOR OF CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE:
J.B. and the Creatures of Braeden Forest
One of J.B.’s struggles in Curse of the Granville Fortune is battling the creatures inside Braeden Forest. Of course, there are your typical forest animals -- bears, squirrels, vultures, and wolves. But Braeden Forest is linked to the curse on J.B. and his family. That means the forest preys on fears and actually brings those fears to life.
What does that mean for J.B. and his sister Holly? Every time one of them voices a fear, the forest makes it real. That’s right. Mention a bear, and the tree next to you will turn into a giant leafy bear. And don’t be fooled into thinking leaf teeth can’t hurt you. Just imagine what a scary cave could transform into. Or a giant boulder. If you can imagine it and it scares you, it can happen inside Braeden Forest.
The idea for this kind of setting came to me when I was doing laundry of all things. I looked out the window and saw a tree branch that looked like a crouching tiger. It reminded me of when I was a child, and I’d try to find pictures in the trees. It’s a lot like finding pictures in clouds, but I used to do this on long road trips using the trees on the side of the highway. From there, my mind created all sorts of creatures, both real and imagined. I ran with that idea because it really brought the setting of Braeden Forest to life and made it another character in the book.
Finding out what happens when your fears come to life became a huge part of this story and was really fun to write.
