The Reason I Dressed
We had big plans this weekend. We were supposed to head to Florence for a massive market housed in the Ancient Fortress of the city. This fair is dedicated to all things Artisan and Handmade and I was going to write an article for the blog about it. The plan was to go first thing in the morning (Florence is about an hour’s drive away) then have lunch, and stroll the city with our son till evening.
Part of having a family and being parents, I guess, is also learning to recognize when you need to sacrifice certain things for your kid’s benefit. At three years old Zeno’s last molars are coming in, and the poor kid was in PAIN this weekend. The kind of unbearable pain that won’t let you even consume soup, let alone be a tourist in Florence all day! Out of the two of us my very practical Virgo husband is just that….practical. He never gets disappointed if our plans don’t come through and was the first to suggest we skip florence and just take a stroll in Modena’s Centro, in search of a snack, a change of scene and ice cream!
EXPO Influence – Cities that Change
You may have heard by now that I’m an EXPO Ottimista - an EXPO Optimist, and I will be sharing throughout the next 6 months all about the current EXPO in Milan! Last week I shared 5 reasons why I think every Italian should visit the EXPO and I wrote about how the EXPO is everywhere in Italy, not just in Milan.
Take Modena for example. The EXPO was the perfect excuse to finish up so many projects that had been started and not finished in the city, but also to appreciate new public squares and spaces that were underutilized. The area in front of Modena’s Duomo (the Duomo itself being a UNESCO World Heritage Site) has always been a street mainly used for buses. Rather dangerous to cross, there was too much traffic to really enjoy the Duomo’s facade or hang out.
In the last few months they’ve closed off this area, turned it into a really nice Piazza with new stonework and benches, and it is already one of my new favorite places in the city.
Cropped – The Rise of Culottes
You may have noticed that I got a haircut, but truthfully as of yesterday it is even shorter!! I really needed something different, something fresh, something…short! Maybe that’s why culottes are back in style in a big way? Perhaps everyone was just ready for a change, and the fresh silhouette of culottes makes everything old new again. I have to admit they are really perfect for this in-between Spring weather, and I feel so good wearing them.
On this particular day it was very sunny and warm but with a breeze that was a little chilly. Too hot with my leather jacket on, but too cold with it off. Plus, now that I no longer use aluminum based deodorant I fear sweat like you have no idea. So I put my leather jacket over my shoulders and voilà, I look “fashionable”, my shoulders and back are warm and my underarms stay dry, which is the most important factor when wearing a lycra bodysuit!
The Silver Spring
Aside from my linen culottes, this season I’m also loving Silver EVERYTHING. Silver accessories are a major trend this Spring and will continue right through the summer and Fall. I fell in love with these silver Zara shoes on Instagram a few months ago and bought them when they were still in-store for under 20 euro. I LOVE wearing them with my real metallic silver leather and zebra printed cavallino crossbody bag by Italian brand BeWhy Accessories. 100% made by hand in Italy, I’ve featured this brand here as part of my Hand Made Series.
