Rock Duo Highlights Highway Of Tears in Power Video for New Single
Emerging Canadian rock duo has announced their upcoming self-titled album and released a powerful new single and video in End Of The Road.
Fans who have followed the band through their rise so far know that they are committed to the important issue of reconciliation and justice for the Indigenous people in Canada. End Of The Road fits into that mission and commitment, shining a spotlight on the Highway of Tears and the more than 40 missing and murdered women, mostly Indigenous, have disappeared.
With an introduction narrated by Tanya Tagaq, the End Of The Road video is powerful before the music begins. And with the choreography of Teineisha Richards and performances of the Indigenous dancers throughout the song, the message never fades when paired with the Crown Lands track.

In an explanation of feelings and meaning to go with the song, lead singer and drummer Cody Bowles said, "End Of The Road is an outcry for awareness and action surrounding the colonial horrors of the missing and murdered Indigenous Womxn, Girls, and Two-Spirits that still haunt Indigenous communities today. Violence against Indigenous people is something I have witnessed firsthand throughout my life. I am half Mi'kmaw and grew up spending a lot of my childhood in and around Alderville First Nation. I identify as Two-Spirit and dream of a better world for the brilliant Indigenous womxn, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people who face adversity every day for their very existence. It's up to all of us to make this world a better place for future generations, and this song is a small message of hope adding to the rising wave of Indigenous resistance throughout this land."
Rock and roll with a conscience isn't new, but it's always great to see. And moving an important message forward is commendable. It's a great bonus that, as a song, End Of The Road is a continuation of the things we've been into from Crown Lands since we first saw them playing small shows on small stages a few years ago. Guitarist, Kevin Comeau sums it up nicely saying, "People are going to listen to you, so you may as well say something that matters."

The duo's self-titled album will include End Of The Road along with six other tracks and was produced by six-time Grammy Winner, Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, John Prine, Jason Isbell, Rival Sons, etc.), which gives us all kinds of confidence in the talent and care that went into each track. And with Cody saying, "Dave pushed us to listen to ourselves and really trust our initial instinct with a song", we have the confidence that nothing was taken away from what Crown Lands does well to make it come together.
Note: About a month ago, Trish had a chance to write about Crown Lands' EP, Wayward Flyers Vol. 1 and had the band run through a round of 5 Quick Questions. to check it out!
The new album is scheduled for release on August 13, 2020 - and to say that we're excited for the band and for the music is an understatement. We've been fortunate to watch as they've gone from the opening act at a small suburban venue to Canadian Music Week shows in bright lights, to their label deal and big exciting things. And if what we've heard on End Of The Road, Howlin' Back and Spit It Out are an indication of what we're going to get on the remaining four songs, we're all in.
