Yosemite National Park, in central eastern California, reaches across the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain chain covering an area of 747,956 acres.
Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, Giant Sequoia groves, and biological diversity. Almost 95% of the park is designated wilderness.
About 1 million years ago, snow and ice accumulated, forming glaciers at the higher alpine meadows that moved down the river valleys. The downslope movement of the ice masses cut and sculpted the U-shaped Yosemite valley that attracts over 3.7 million visitors a year.
Of California’s 7,000 plant species, about 50% occur in the Sierra Nevada and more than 20% within Yosemite, including more than 160 rare plants inhabiting the park’s rare geologic formations and unique soils.
In contrast to surrounding lands, which have been significantly altered by logging, the park still contains some 225,510 acres of old-growth forest.Taken together, the park’s varied habitats support over 250 species of vertebrates, which include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
