Cost-Cutting Ways To Add More Space

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

Looking for cost-cutting ways to add more space to your home? There are several options although it can be hard to know which is the most cost-effective choice and will give you the most benefit.

If you don't want something like a conservatory extension, you may opt for a side return extension, garage conversion, or installing a porch.

Alternatively, you could add to your living space by adapting unused storage space in places you may not have considered.

Side Return Extension

Side return extensions are an excellent use of otherwise unused and often neglected space. Many Victorian terraced or newer semi-detached homes have access down the side of the house. Typically this is used for storing bins, bikes, and garden equipment.

However, this unassuming little plot of land could make all the difference to the living space of your home. It could give you a spacious kitchen diner or enlarged living area without too much disruption or upheaval.

Apart from the obvious upside of having more space in your home, this option doesn't eat into your garden, which you would have to do with a rear extension.

Garage Conversion

A good quality garage conversion can add value to your house as well as increase the living space. You can also use the new room for any purpose; an extra bedroom, home office, or larger kitchen.

The cost of converting a garage is less than what you can expect to pay for a loft conversion or rear extension. This is because the structure is already in place. All you have to do is convert it to a different use.

Partial conversion is a good option if you have a large garage but still need a storage room.

Consider A Porch

If your hallway is cluttered and full of shoes, school bags, and sports equipment, consider a porch. This may seem like a small addition to your home but its impact can be significant in terms of space and storage.

Forget tripping over discarded football boots and dog leads, and use your hallway as the welcoming space it should be. A porch can also protect your home from muddy shoes, dripping umbrellas and soggy dogs.

For homes where the front door opens directly into the front room, this can be a lifesaver and acts as protection against the elements.

Effective Storage

Take a look around your home at all the potential places where you could add some effective storage. Under the stairs, alcoves on either side of a fireplace, or on large landings are ideal spots for introducing open shelving or storage cupboards.

Get rid of boxes and crates that take up floor space. Instead, display your possessions on open shelves or use pretty storage containers. Wicker storage baskets make great under-bed storage while the back of doors can hold multiple items on racks, bars, and hooks.

Final Thoughts

Your home has plenty of potential for you to add more space, you just need to decide how to get the best out of it in the most cost-friendly way.
