An iconic B-52D Stratofortress on display at the B-52 Memorial Park, adjacent to Orlando International Airport. Delivered to the USAF in 1956, this aircraft was at one time assigned to the 306th Bomb Wing of the now defunct McCoy Air Force Base (now Orlando International Airport). Retired in 1984, this B-52 made its final flight from the 7th Bomb Wing at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth, TX, to Orlando. The memorial park was dedicated in April 17, 1985, dedicated to those who served at the former McCoy AFB. This Stratofortress wears the Southeast Asia jungle camouflage scheme on the upper surfaces with a black belly to avoid detection by enemy searchlights at night. First flown in 1952, the Stratofortress is expected to serve into the 2050s. Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept the B-52 in service despite the advent of newer, more advanced aircraft. As of 2024, 76 of the original 744 B-52 aircraft were operational in the U.S. Air Force.
