Confessions of a Blogger: Amber’s Mouthwash

By Girlratesworld @girlratesworld

Today I had the opportunity to interview Amber from Amber’s Mouthwash – cool name, right? Amber is a fashion guru who isn’t afraid to do her own thing. I love that. She plays by her own set of rules. Her blog is filled with aspiration and inspiration. It makes you wanna get out and live life the same way she does.  That, in itself, is a gift.

GRW: Why did you start Amber’s Mouthwash?

AM: Amber’s Mouthwash originally started as a way for me to record and share my dual internships that I currently had. I was a Fine Arts/Art History major in college, and of course loved fashion, and I had recently landed two of my dream internships: one with a fashion PR firm, and the another under a museum curator. I was on cloud nine! I wanted to share every moment with anyone willing to listen. However, it quickly morphed into a fashion blog – although elements of art history still remain. I do a fun series on the blog titled “Dressing with Artists” where I create and style outfits inspired by artists and their work.

GRW: How long have you been blogging?

My 5 year anniversary is coming up in July. I can’t imagine not having my blog be a huge part of my life. It’s almost existential.

GRW: What was your 1st ever blog post?

My first ever blog post was about my starting my second internship. I titled it “Two Days and Counting“. The post was all about my anticipation about the new internship, summer school frustrations, and the ever random quip of “don’t eat raw bread dough – it makes your tummy hurt.” That post got 6 hits. All of which were my own.

GRW: What was the worst fashion trend ever?

You know…Every trend seems to come back around again. Have you noticed? I know a lot of bloggers aren’t feeling the overall, or boyfriend jean trend, but I love it! I love to wear dresses because “bam!” you’re instantly dressed. I’m a little lazy like that. I feel that overalls provide the same insta-dressed satisfaction. On a heavier note, I feel the very worst fashion trend ever is the paradigm that in order to be in “fashion” you have to look, or behave a certain way. It’s ridiculous. I’ve worked alongside designers and entrepreneurial women of large companies, and have seen again and again that kindness and common courtesy can take you very far.

GRW: Sprinkles or Hot Fudge?

Ooh hot fudge!! On bananas. Or dark chocolate chips melted down and mixed with salted peanut butter. With bananas.

GRW: Which celebrity needs a fashion makeover by you?

Any of the Kardashian family, really. But do I want my name associated with them? Not really.

GRW: Chic or Edgy?

Both! That’s the fun thing about fashion and style, you can be whoever you want, depending on the accessories. I love to take a girly piece such as a fit and flare dress and have it in something completely unexpected – like leather. I couldn’t find anything like I was imaging, so I had one custom made. It’s both chic and edgy all at once!

GRW: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter: Which season really brings out your fashion creativity?

Spring and Fall – those are the layering seasons where I get to play with pattern and texture, length and color on multiple levels.

GRW: What’s the worst thing you ever ate?

Actually – I just experienced this! I’m vegetarian (born and raised), and recently visited my boyfriend’s family in Texas. I’ve never tasted meat. His family and I were in a Mexican restaurant and his father asked if they had any vegetarian options. She named a dish, which I ordered. I cut into it, and it tasted fine. But the second bite tasted a little “off”. Then I found a small piece of meat, which I set aside (figured maybe it had fallen in from another dish), but when it happened again, I opened up my quesadilla, only to discover it was laced with shredded pork. i wanted to cry.

GRW: Who is your favorite Disney Princess?

Ariel. That hair! Also, because of Ariel I met my childhood best friend. We used to play “Ariel” on the playground slide (you know the famous singing on a rock scene…).
