We don’t have many Christmas traditions in our part of the world but this for me is one ~ the annual viewing of The Snowman.
This simple film touches my heart each and every time, every corner of it is beautiful and full of wonder.
So I’m rehashing my post from several years ago. I thought I would share this Christmas Eve but as we are all typically bugging out by then and busy with Christmas preparations, I thought why not the set the scene for the week and share it today.
The Snowman is a children’s book by Raymond Briggs, adapted into a short, animated film {both are wordless} and first shown on TV on Christmas Eve in 1982. It was even nominated for an Oscar. In 2012 came the sequel featuring a new little boy and a snow dog.
“I remember that winter because it had brought the heaviest snows I had ever seen. Snow had fallen steadily all night long and in the morning I woke in a room filled with light and silence, the whole world seemed to be held in a dream-like stillness. It was a magical day… and it was on that day I made the Snowman.”
We have the DVD in a set of three Christmas DVDs given to us one Christmas. Honestly, I thought it was probably from one of the bargain pick-ups you find in a bin near the door. Although we loved it, particularly The Snowman and particularly, for me, the scene above which features the song Walking on the Air. Beautiful song, beautiful film, beautiful illustration.
