If I came to visit early in the morning would you impress me as being more like a chirpy bird or a grumpy bear?
After working six years on nights, I am definitely a grumpy bear! I used to work from midnight to 8am and even now, my sleep patterns are still wonky. I am not a pleasant person to be around if I haven’t had enough sleep. My mother even bought me Grumpy Care Bear as a present a couple of years ago after my niece and nephew called me grumpy bear! J
Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?
China! I have been fascinated with Chinese Mythology and history since I was a little girl. It’s been a life-long dream of mine to walk the Great Wall, or visit the Forbidden City. I would love to one day write a story featuring a Chinese heroine, but I’d prefer to see the country first.
Do your friends think you are an introvert or an extravert? Why?
I think they would say I’m introverted with people I do not know, but myself with them. I’m much more comfortable in certain environments over others, and I’m not afraid of spending time by myself. I feel that to have a creative mind that sometimes tends to lean to the dark side, you have to be introverted. Someone who has never spent a lot of time in their own head cannot begin to imagine, least of all show the reader.
Do you have a favorite quote, quip, or saying? What is it?
I have a favorite writing quote that I had tattooed on my right arm. I first heard it on an episode of Criminal Minds, from Cyril Connolly “Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self” This is to remind myself that I cannot write for the readers if when writing for them, I forget who I am.
You just won a huge lottery what is the first thing you'll buy?
Oh, this is a question myself and my work buddies have talked about in great lengths. I have a few things I would have to buy, like a house big enough to have an office and a library, or finally have my trip to China. But, my biggest splurge would be to track down a black Austin Martin DB9 and kit it out with custom alloys and interior! It’s my dream car…
Do you have any special routines or rituals?
One of my strictest routines before I start writing is definitely my playlists. I tend to combine a long list of songs and then play certain songs when trying to get into a different character’s head. It helps to get in a particular zone. I find myself on most days upon hearing a new song, saying, “This is so an Ever song.” Or “I can totally see Ricky singing that in the car.”
If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?
I think it would be Caitlyn Hardi. She’s beautiful, dangerous, but has a heart of gold. She’s working my other dream job (I’ve always wanted to be a profiler!) Like me, she’s got some issues with trust, but is surrounded by people who chip away at that icy exterior.
