On Friday at CMW, early in the evening with the sun still shining and people milling around the city after work and moving from one place to another, we got to see one of our favourite sets of the week in the courtyard at the Drake 150 when Demi Louise stepped up to her microphones.

CMW 2016 Spotlight: Demi Louise
We first saw Demi a year ago at The Cameron House, and have stayed in touch over the year, which is easy because she's so good on social media, and couldn't wait for her to come back to Canada, and Toronto for Canadian Music Week 2016... and we're really happy she did.

Demi was sweet and charming and had everyone within earshot paying close attention as she moved through her songs. Accompanied this year by her keyboard player, the sound was well put together as she strummed her acoustic guitar and sang into not 1, but 2 microphones in alternating order.

Demi also had everyone laughing between songs as she told stories of being at Glastonbury and playing in the artist VIP for the likes of Kanye West (who told her he didn't like country music), and Adele (who was hidden behind giant sunglasses and unidentifiable while Demi played a cover of 1 of her hits) and laughing to herself and with us as she talked.

The Aussie songstress moved smoothly through a set that included Jealous Street, Neon, Rivers Run to Red (the 2014 Australian Songwriters Association Pop Song of The Year), Ruins, and Taxi Driver, which she wrote in Toronto last year during Canadian Music Week. Her voice was sweet and matches her personality perfectly, and we loved every minute of it.

As we were listening we starting imagining ways that we could see Demi more, and on bigger stages, and we wondered how great a fit she'd be on tour with Ed Sheeran - opening the show with her guitar before he comes out on stage and does his thing with his guitar... we're thinking it's a pretty good fit!

But no matter who she's playing with, or which venue we find her at, we'll be happy the next time Demi Louise is in Toronto with new songs to play for us, and more smiles and laughs along the way.
