This is one of our organizing power tips! Once you have made the change to get organized, how do you keep it up? The answer: The Ten Minute Tidy. The concept is simple — set aside ten minutes a day for all family members to put items away. You can do it at any point in the day, and each family member can do it at a different time. Some people like to do it in the evening, right before they go to bed. They take their ten minutes to go throughout the home and put items that belong to them away. We like to think of it as a reset button for the next morning. If you have put everything away from the day’s activities, you start fresh the next day and clutter doesn’t have a chance to multiply.
The best part of the Ten Minute Tidy is the multiplication factor. It is pretty easy to find ten minutes in your day to put things back in order. Because it is such a small amount of time, it doesn’t seem like you can accomplish much, but you can! However, the multiplication factor can make it even more powerful. If you have five people in your family, and everyone participates for ten minutes, that’s almost an hour’s worth of clean up time going on in your home every day! In a week, that’s almost seven hours of time getting things in order within your home.
The ten minute tidy also works for the beginning steps in getting organized. If you can take ten minutes a day to start getting rid of the clutter that bogs down your life, you will start making progress very quickly!
Think you can’t accomplish a lot in ten minutes? Start with one small area and try and put things away. Empty the dishwasher, hang up the clothes on the floor of your closet, clean off your bathroom sink, tidy your night table, clean out the fridge, or throw away some old mail. Use a timer and you will be shocked at how much you can get done in just a few minutes. If you change your mindset on how long things take, you can accomplish a lot!
