Firefighter Recruitment
FIREFIGHTER (PART-TIME)
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs firefighting and fire prevention duties; performs ambulance and emergency medical service duties; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a standardized manual work of a hazardous nature involving fighting fires, salvage and rescue and EMS work under the immediate supervision of superior officers. The work generally involves fighting fires, providing EMS and/or other emergency situations which may arise. The Firefighter (part-time) may work under the immediate supervision of any full-time Firefighter or Fire Officer.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
Responds to emergency situations including fires, emergency medical calls, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergencies requiring the services of Firefighters;
Performs station and equipment cleaning and maintenance as required;
Performs salvage operations at fire scene, such as covering furniture with tarpaulins and cleaning debris;
Assists in giving medical and pre-hospital emergency care as an EMT;
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Mental alertness; mechanical aptitude to get along well with others; willingness to perform any task assigned; conscientiousness and dependability; excellent physical condition.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from a high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and either:
- a) Satisfactory graduation from the New York State Fire Academy recruit training program; or
- b) Successful completion of outreach coursework equivalent to the NYS Fire Academy recruit training program; or
- c) Participant in the City of Oneonta Part-Time Firefighter recruitment program.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATION: Satisfactory completion of a certified NYSDOH basic EMT training program.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible for appointment, candidates must possess a valid New York State Driver’s license and have a CPR card at time of appointment. Candidates must also pass physical and fitness requirements.
