Circumstantial Illumination

By Ashleylister @ashleylister
Tonight at 6pm, Cafe Number 5 is our Open Mic Night.  Be there or be a burnt out lightbulb!

In the meantime here is a bit of free verse I wrote to accompany my poem The Sonnet of Broken Dreams.
Circumstantial Illumination

Unwelcome Illumination
Entwined in alcoholic haze and murky lights couples undulate to roughened jazz and blues. They twist and turn, gyrating in a frenzied mating dance - distracting in its ferocity. The greasy compere with confident air self congratulates introducing the next act.Another singer with a guitar;Again.Backdropping scheduled narrative repeats of another liaison in a darkened room. The pungent smell of tequila laced beer mingles with spiced shaving oils,Working with opiate efficiency to blur her conscious thoughts into a seething,Pulsing mass of crossed wires.  Mixed signals.  Bad decisions.Amidst kisses of tingling fire and in safe harboured embrace,Clarity dawns - a frigid, torrential ice shower. This will never last, never be what it could and time here is wasted.Sadness is a stone coffin,Confusion tearing limb from limb and heart from body.Until in turmoil, illumination and acceptance is hers. This love is her lifeblood, vivacious and ever-present, welded into her being;Better to hold onto than to feel the pain of it being torn from her veinsOnly to be scattered upon the festering slag heap of broken dreams.
Thanks and see you tonight.
