Covington, Indiana: Circle Trail Bridge
little Indiana and family heard about a bridge on Circle Trail in Covington, Indiana, so, leaving our boys and hubby at the park, I decided to see if I could find it.
Turns out I should have started at the park, but I eventually found it–and am I ever impressed!
Indiana Bridges: Circle Trail Bridge
Covington, Indiana has found a way to make use of one century old Indiana bridge–as well as making it a focal point for the community.
Built in 1904, this type of bridge, known as a Pratt Pony Truss, once spanned across the East Fork of Coal Creek. After a bit of refurbishing and a splitting in two, it has found new purpose as a way to join to trails together.
The Circle Trail Bridge now holds bicyclists and walkers, runners, joggers, and strollers as the community crosses the bridge on the f3.2 mile trail. With plans to encircle the entire community, this is a big boon for the town!

When it’s completed, there will be slightly more than six miles of smooth paved trail. It is even handicapped accessible. On my travels, I found a nice picnic area complete with tables. That’s a nice, thoughtful touch.
Everyone I spoke with in this town seemed to mention this Fountain County attraction. It’s a point of pride for this small town–and I can’t say I blame them!
In a time when so many towns and cities are tearing down and throwing away, it’s nice to see what can happen with a little foresight, a lot of planning, and a dedication to saving these unique pieces of our history.
Because, truly, you just don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.

If it’s between tearing down an Indiana bridge or repurposing it in some way, I’m all for repurposing!
This Indiana town has found a way to respectfully merge the old while creating the new. It should serve as inspiration to small towns everywhere.
