Winston Churchill and the most popular texting abbreviation ever are inextricably linked. In 1917, British admiral John Fisher sent a letter to Churchill containing the first known instance of “OMG," where he wrote the acronym, followed by (Oh! My God!) as explanation. Fisher was head of the British Navy during World War I, but had a falling out with Churchill after the Gallipoli campaign. It took over eighty years later for teenagers everywhere to catch on to the duo’s cleverly coded message.
