One of the greatest things about Christmas are the Christmas markets. Bundle up and head out with family or friends to wander from stall to stall, admiring the wares for sale. Take in the holiday atmosphere: the people, the lights, the decorations. Refuel on some of the delicious seasonal goodies and grab some hot cocoa to warm your cold lips and hands.
There are Christmas markets throughout Europe and, while Germany is often thought of as the king of Christmas markets, you don’t have to cross over the boarder to enjoy the holiday tradition.
The Netherlands is also home to many excellent Christmas markets, some of which are located in Amsterdam. If that’s not enough to get you in the holiday spirit, just a hop, skip, and a jump away in Lisse, you can treat yourself to Christmas at the Keukenhof.
Turns out there’s much more to the Keukenhof than the annual flower show. In fact, Christmas at the Keukenhof was among The Telegraph’s top 5 Christmas markets in Europe for 2011.
More a fair than a market, Christmas at the Keukenhof has the usual stands, stalls, and chalets with things to buy, eat, and drink, but also includes an ice rink, children’s petting zoo, circus, storyteller, and a Winter Wonderland.
Children will delight in seeing beloved characters like the Ice Queen and Santa Claus. The Keukenhof Castle will be open to visitors and the gardens will be decorated with lights. There will also be a floral show at the Keukenhof gardens, featuring tulips, hyacinths, and other blooming spring flowers.
Christmas at the Keukenhof runs this weekend only. It’s sure to be a fabulously fun time, so be sure not to miss it!
