According to Latino Review, Christopher Nolan has been given full creative control over their Justice League franchise and WB wants the entire thing set in the same universe as ”The Dark Knight” trilogy. If this is to be believed, then they’re no longer rebooting Batman (meaning it is absolutely possible that Christian Bale would reprise his role), but this wasn’t necessarily the approach they had in mind from the start. It makes sense though that Warner Brothers would approach Christopher Nolan to commandeer their biggest flagship with the advent of film makers taking control of all the biggest franchises in film history (Joss Whedon has The Avengers, J.J. Abrams has Star Wars and Star Trek).
So what made all this possible? First, Warner Brothers was understandably upset with the first draft of the Justice League script they received from Will Beall. I didn’t think he had it in him to come up with a screenplay for a multi-billion dollar property (though I’m always cautiously optimistic) that could stand toe-to-toe with The Avengers, and WB immediately hit the panic button. Secondly, while they were at a loss for how they would move forward with this project, they had a closed screening for the new Man of Steel film. I’ve heard countless articles on-line about how much people dug this movie, so I feel like it’s a no-brainer that the studio that once felt like they were trapped within their own ambition has finally decided to pursue Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder to helm their biggest movie yet.
This move makes a ton of sense since Christopher Nolan created a Batman trilogy that made more money than all the solo Avengers films combined. Plus, Man of Steel already shares a similar tone with his previous super hero attempts so there are no drastic changes to be made. WB is desperate right now, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that they’re willing to go with a working formula and develop something solid out of it instead of gambling with new creative minds. You could say Marvel in comparison has made a lot of great decisions that pulled in a variety of good creative teams to oversee their productions, but back then the ball was in Marvel’s court. With Christopher Nolan’s success at the box office, it was up to Marvel to prove that they could outperform his DC films, but right now, Warner Brothers doesn’t have the luxury to try out other approaches. They need to come out quick and strong to match Marvel and I honestly believe that this was the best move available to them.
As for how a previously-thought-to-be-dead Bruce Wayne would come back to don his cowl and fight along side Henry Cavill’s Superman, I don’t think it would be as difficult as people would think. Superman could easily track him down and ask for his help against a common threat. I don’t know how Joseph Gordon-Levitt would fit into this scheme though…unless they bring him back as Nightwing.
