Choose Love

By Lisaorchard @lisaorchard1

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. It’s been a busy week of writing, working, and running. I’ve hunkered down in front of the fire most nights because it is bitterly cold outside. I did get out once this weekend for a walk, but the wind was biting and the cold seeped through my jeans in no time. However, it was good to get out and get some fresh air. But enough about that. Today, I want to talk about the Lions and the Commanders play-off game last night.

That’s right. I want to talk about a football game, but alas, this post isn’t about football. During the game, I noticed after a number of turnovers by the lions (sob), that the players had the words “Choose Love” on the back of their helmets.

I asked hubby why those words were on not only the Lions helmets, but those of the opposing team as well. He didn’t know. He was more interested in the dynamics of the game and wanted to talk about the turnovers. I however, did not.

I turned my focus to those words. I wanted to know what they meant. So, I googled them, and this is what I learned.

They are a reference to the increase in gun violence and hate crimes across the US.

I love that the NFL has acknowledged this is a problem. I love it. But I’m wondering if the words on the back of a helmet are enough? Have these words changed anything? Has gun violence diminished in the United States?

Sadly, the answer to the above questions is a resounding NO. They haven’t changed anything. So, I challenge the NFL to take this a step further. To advocate for gun control. To use their substantial influence to confront Congress about changing some of the gun laws and making it harder for young people and people with mental illnesses to buy guns. This seems to be such an easy fix. I don’t know why the powers that be don’t see this.

But then we don’t know their agenda do we? Maybe the powers that be like us fighting over this issue, so we’re distracted from what they’re doing? Just a thought. I don’t have any evidence to support this because I haven’t dug deep enough, but I’ve heard this so many times, I’m starting to believe it.

How about you? Any ideas on how to take care of the mass shooting problem the United States faces? Leave a message, I’d love to hear from you!
