Granola - crunchy healthy with a bit of indulgent chocolate makes this little treat even more tasty!
Granola is traditionally a breakfast food, but when made into bars they are now a popular snack too. Normally made with oats, honey and nuts and baked until crisp and crunchy.
Granola is a great snack or breakfast for those who are going to use a lot of energy, such as a hike, back packing or even runs and long distance bike rides. This is mainly because of the compact portable size and high in calories.
Granola bars are great healthy choice, as they generally made with natural raw ingredients which are also great for slow release energy and added vitamins which keeps you feeling fuller for longer.
Granola bars are so versatile, as you could make them your own by swapping out or adding some dried fruits or different nuts.
Ingredients
3 cups Oats
1/8 Cup Oil
2 Tbsp Butter melted
Pinch Salt
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup Honey
1/8 Cup Treacle
1/8 Cup Orange Juice (fresh)
1 1/2 Tsp Vanilla
1/2 Cup Mixed Chopped nuts
1/4 Cup Rice Cereal
1/2 Cup Oat Bran
4oz Milk Chocolate
Add oats and salt to a bowl.
Add oil and butter to the oats
Mix well, trying to coat all the oats with butter and oil
In 2 baking trays, evenly split the oats and bake in the oven at 170c for 20 minutes until lightly toasted.
In a small pan, add packed brown sugar
Add honey
Add vanilla, treacle and orange juice, then heat the pan over medium heat.
Remove the toasted oats from oven once lightly toasted and allow to cool for a few minutes.
Add the oats to a large bowl, then add chopped nuts, rice cereal and oat bran to the oats
Add the sweet liquid and stir ensuring that all the dry is coated with the liquid
Pour granola mixture into a lines and oiled baking tray
Flatten and spread evenly the mixture, pressing down firmly then bake in the oven at 160c for 25 minutes.
Leave the granola in the baking tray and cool completely.
Using a sharp knife, slice into smaller pieces.
Melt the chocolate in the microwave and then dip the underside of the granola in the chocolate
Ensure the side is coated well.
Place back on the grease paper until the chocolate has set, continue until all the bars have been dipped in chocolate.
If you have any left over chocolate, using a spoon or spatula drip and drizzle the remaining chocolate over the top of the granola bars.
Allow the granola bars to set.
