Children’s Book Review: Princess Cupcake Jones Won’t Go to School! by Ylleya Fields
By Parentingauthor @ParentingAuthor
I still remember the days when my kids were afraid of a new school year. Kindergarten was the most challenging because even though my twins had been to preschool, they were transferring to a new school for kindergarten and would be in separate classes for the first time. It was painful to hear their pleas to stay home, but they were soon big fans of kindergarten once they arrived. That’s the story, as well, in Princess Cupcake Jones Won’t Go to School! by Ylleya Fields. Cupcake tries all of the usual tricks to avoid her first day of school, like faking sickness and hiding. But her mother stays firm and hustles Cupcake off to school. It doesn’t take long before Cupcake has made her first friend and decides that kindergarten isn’t as scary as she had imagined!
Princess Cupcake Jones Won’t Go to School! is a sweet rhyming story that kids and parents will relate to. It’s very common for kids (and adults!) to fear the unknown, and going to school for the first time is definitely scary. Will I have friends? Will my clothes be cool? Will my teacher be nice? These are all big issues when you’re a little kid. Cupcake realizes that her worries are bigger than reality, and that there are all kinds of friendly children and fun activities at school. This is a terrific book to read with young children, especially those who will be heading off to kindergarten or facing an upcoming event that makes them fearful.
