By leaps and bounds, biologists are making startling progress on fertility, enabling even menopausal-age women to conceive.
Recently, a 65-year-old friend of mine named Muriel conceived and gave birth to her first child! When she was discharged home from the hospital, I went to pay the happy new mom a visit.
“May I see the new baby?,” I asked, hardly able to contain my excitement.
“Not yet,” Muriel said. “I’ll make coffee and we can visit for a while first….”
So we had a nice cup of coffee together, and chatted about other things.
Thirty minutes passed.
I asked, “May I see the new baby now?”
“No, not yet,” she said.
After another few minutes had elapsed, I asked again, “May I see the baby now?”
Again Muriel said, “No, not yet.”
Growing very impatient, I nevertheless waited another ten minutes, then asked, “Well, when can I see the baby?”
“WHEN HE CRIES!,” she said.
“When he cries?,” I asked. “But why do I have to wait until he CRIES?”
“BECAUSE I FORGOT WHERE I PUT HIM, O.K.?”
