Cheat Day: Gourmet Grilled Cheeses!

Cheat Day

Photos of Cheat Day’s gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches have been popping up on my Instagram and Facebook feed. Naturally intrigued, I setup a foodie adventure with Echo and MacaronMan.

Restaurant Interior

After class, we booked it down to Seymour St. in search of these delectable cheese toasties. It’s a quaint sandwich shop with elongated tables that I wished were taller. To me, the place didn’t give off the comforting and welcoming vibe that a grilled cheese would… They definitely need to inject some music, especially in the absence of the hustle and bustle of full restaurant.

Plastic Army Soldiers

Plastic soldiers glued onto the wall was a pretty cool idea.

Assorted Drinks

Cheat Day offers a selection interesting drinks like SPARKMOUTH Ginger Ale and GoodDrink bottle teas.

SPARKMOUTH Ginger Ale & GoodDrink Green Tea

When MacaronMan asked the owner which drink to get, he replied, “the ginger ale tastes like ginger.” That may sound like a redundant thing to say, but he was perfectly correct! The SPARKMOUTH Ginger Ale packed a huge punch of spicy ginger, which was great for refreshing the palette after eating so much cheese!

The GoodDrink Green Tea was sweet, lemon-y and smooth. Quite refreshing, although I still preferred the ginger ale.

Gourmet Grilled Cheese

There was one sandwich that captivated all three of us: So Gouda ($9).

So Gouda

Titled with a clever play on words, the So Gouda housed smoked gouda, bacon, mushrooms, caramelized onions, arugula and roasted garlic mayo. They were out of brioche and white bread that day, so we got it made with sour dough.

Packed with Cheese

Definitely packed to the crust with cheese! Yet, there was a good balance in flavour unlike the Baby Daddy from Mom’s Grilled Cheese Truck.

Ooey gooey goodness :)

So Gouda Upclose

The smokiness from the gouda and bacon definitely elevated the sandwich above the typical grilled cheese. However, MacaronMan noted that he would’ve preferred a leaner cut of bacon since the sandwich was quite heavy already.

The caramelized onions were also done very well. Its sweetness cut through the otherwise overwhelming heavy flavours of the cheese, bacon and mayo. Too bad, the arugula was lost in the sea of melty goo. I didn’t even realize there was arugula in the sandwich until I was editing my photos.

It would’ve been nice if there was some textural contrast. Especially with the bread, it could’ve been even crispier… I want that audible crunch that sends an invigorating vibe through my spine like when you step and stomp on autumn leaves.

Final Bytes

  1. Didn’t leave feeling groggy
  2. They offer an always-changing daily special
  3. Wished there was something fresh/vibrant that would lighten the sandwich
