Changing Domains Like a Schizo

Posted on the 03 December 2012 by Linsibrownson @CleverSpark

My first domain was…

I can’t even remember anymore.

Then I got a hair up my ass after listening to a “guru” that I must change my domain to include my location.

I should have stopped, collaborated and listened to something other than this “guru”.

First, I didn’t want to have a location dependent business. I was trying to create an online only business.

Second, by creating a new domain to include this location I was taking my self out of a lot of other markets.

Third, this would not be the only domain name change in my business life.

Fast forward a year.

I listen to another “guru” and find out that I should have some keyword in my domain name that is special to my business.

Said “guru” said this would bring business. So I change my domain name again.

Then there was this other “guru”. They said I should use my name as my domain name. I was my brand after all.

So I changed my domain name again.

StopChangingDomainNames

I’m sure you are already seeing the problems this was going to create.

1. By changing the domain name all the time, I was losing my audience. They got lost in the shuffle or tired of following me all over the global internets like I was Carmen Sandiego.

2. I could have named my domain poop.com and it wouldn’t matter as much as the content and that my personality was showing up on the website.

3. Buying every domain name known to man does not make a business. Unless you’re selling them to make a profit.

Heed my warning. Pick a domain name and stick to it.
