CerebralMix 2015-09-06: Poetry Series Ep 5

Here we are again, with another episode in the CerebralMix Poetry Series. Now this episode gets a way bit from the theme and variations that have been going on for the past few episodes, although there is still come trace of it.

The thing that is fun about these shows is that, in a way, the music is being re-contextualized by the poetry readings that are being presented. There is something about being able to think about a piece of music in a way in which it relates differently to it’s surroundings that makes things somewhat more interesting in my opinion.

I’ve been doing a bit of reading lately about music, and one of the things that came up was how an author had a completely different relationship with classical music versus pop / rock music. In his experience, he grew up with classical music, so he understands all the inner workings of it, his reactions to certain pieces and melodies and harmonies is almost visceral, whereas having come to rock music much later he experiences it within the frame of his understanding of classical music. In all, this makes for quite a bit of different interpretation, and a perspective that isn’t common these days.

But, in a respect, that’s what I am trying to do here. I am presenting poetic works that many people are familiar with, however I have changed the context of it and presented it with music that quite a few people are less familiar with. This is the kind of experiment and thought process that I like to put myself through when putting together these shows. It’s not about selecting something because it’s popular, it’s about doing something that is different with the form and something that might hopefully make the listener think and feel a bit differently.
