CerebralMix 2015-08-23: Poetry Series Ep 3 might be best called “The Theme and Variations” episode, or at least the first of them.
In this show you might notice that there are some songs that are appearing across episodes. You might also notice that some of the themes in the poetry selection are similar across episodes. This isn’t a mistake. I’ve long been interested in the theme and variation forms in classical music. And, in a respect, I sometimes try to find ways to introduce a macro level version of musical concepts into the show.
This is related to some theories that Frank Zappa had. The idea is that a song could become something different just by setting it in a different context. So, it’s not unusual to find different versions of a song on different albums of his. One of the biggest versions of this came out posthumously: Läther. It had originally been rejected by his record company, so he split it up into four albums (Live In New York, Studio Tan, Orchestral Favorites and Sleep Dirt). But after his death, the family trust was able to resurrect the original recordings, and release the album as it was intended to be released originally.
Now, that doesn’t mean that the four albums that were released in place of Läther are any less recordings than the original version. Instead, the four albums can be seen as variations on the original, or Läther can been seen as a variation on the four that were released in it’s place. However, you look at it, the listening experience between all of these albums is dramatically different because the contexts are different.
Over the next several shows, you might notice the variation of contexts of some of the tracks continues. I hope this will give you a different listening experience, and something to think about: how the poems relate to the songs, and how the songs are inter-related in different contexts between episodes.
