CerebralMix 2015-07-12: Wonderful Wizard of Oz Ep 5 starts reaching the critical point of the novel. The Wicked Witch has been melted, which the author seems to have gone to great lengths to say instead of saying that she has been killed. And now the group travels back to the Emerald City, only to discover that Oz is not really the great Wizard that everyone thinks he is.
And, in hearing his story we have to think about what the book is really about. We hear all about how he deceived Dorothy, The Tin Woodsman, The Scarecrow, and The Cowardly Lion. But if those were his only deceptions, we might understand why he went to these great lengths: to try to find someone to handle the single greatest remaining danger of the Land of Oz.
Instead we hear a story of how he deceived the people into building The Emerald City. How he has tricked them for many years. And how he has made promises to Dorothy and everyone else that he has no way (or intention) of keeping.
Now the question I have always wondered is, is it better to teach children that we can ignore all the wrongs that someone does, in order to allow them to do something right? I think the saying has always been that two wrongs don’t make a right? And, the concept that “the ends justifies the means” has been shown time and again to be wrong. So, why is it okay in children’s literature? Just something to think about as I think it really is telling of the type of society that we have come to live in.
