CerebralMix 2015-01-25: Ulysses Episode Four
We’re up to episode four in our exploration of the Ulysses in it’s un-seen and un-heard music context. This week’s show is focused on the Aeolus episode. And again, there’s another classic line in this episode: the one-handled adulterer. A reference to the namesake monument of Horatio Nelson: Nelson’s Pillar.
According to some reference notes on this section of Ulysses:
The two women sit down and look up at the statue of Nelson, whom Stephen refers to as “the onehandled adulterer” (7.512). He is alluding to the fact that Nelson lost an arm in battle and that he carried on an affair with the wife of the British minister at Naples. MacHugh thinks it is very clever.
So, once again, I learn something that I knew very little about through my show… And I am thankful for the reference notes I found, as the WikiPedia article left out the full context for the quote / joke.
