Quick and easy homemade cereals bars for lunch box treats, specially for kids. It's not very often I buy cereal bars anymore, as its so quick and easy to make it yourself. You know what goes into them and you can change how much sugar or which cereals go into the bars. Children love getting involved into making these, but be careful with the heat butter mix as its super duper hot.
Making cereal bars is a great way to use up cereals that maybe the kids don't like or been sitting in the cupboard, or using up a open bag of marshmallows before they go dry. Marshmallows tend to get this dry and dehydrated look if not in an airtight container, even then they don't last long.
You don't have to bake these bars, you can just spread them in a tray and allow to cool then slice into pieces. The reason I baked mine, were to have that melted chocolate feel instead of clumps of chocolate.
Ingredients
100g Butter
200g Golden Syrup
150g Dark Brown Sugar
100g Marshmellows
250g Mixed Cereal
100g Dark Chocolate
In a small shallow pan add the butter, golden syrup and brown sugar.
Melt over medium heat until the brown sugar has dissolved completely.
Stir in the marshmallows into the butter syrup mixture and stir.
Measure out roughly mixed cereal. I used 125g of Special K, 75g Rice Crispies, 50g Cheerios and 50g Coco pops, but you can use any you have.
Once the marshmallows have started to melt take off the heat.
Pour the mixture into the cereal mix and stir well.
Quickly add in dark chopped chocolate into the cereal mix.
Stir quickly as a may start to feel very sticky.
Once all the cereal is cover, spread in 1 or 2 oven trays about 15mm thick.
Heat oven at 180c and bake for 10 minutes.
Once completely cooled slice into bars
Enjoy all week long!
