Centerpiece Tips

Many large events feature centerpieces as a design element — but it’s easy to use them the wrong way. Here are a few tips to help you incorporate these pieces in the most effective way!

1. Make sure they aren’t too tall. This may seem like an obvious tip, but it is crucial to a successful event design. Making sure that guests can easily see over and through your centerpiece arrangements is key. We have personally attended events where the centerpieces simply overwhelmed the table and seemed to hinder conversation. These design elements should only enhance the event experience, not take away from it.

2. Choose your flowers wisely. If you are planning to use flowers as part of your centerpieces, there are a few important factors to consider. First, flowers usually have a fragrance, so be sure to consider if the smell of your flowers will clash with or complement any food being served. Flowers also can have leaves and pollen, which can shed onto a table throughout the course of an event. It is a good idea to rule out any arrangements that will make a mess. In addition, some cultures have very specific rules about the color and number of certain flowers that can be used at an event. Be sure to research your flower choices in advance to avoid an awkward misunderstanding.

3. Be aware that guests may take them. Some guests may expect to be able to take your centerpieces home at the end of the night. VIP guests and generous donors at charity events often have this expectation. Make sure you aren’t caught off guard when you end the night with fewer centerpieces than you started with! This is especially important if you will be renting your centerpieces, as not returning all of them or having to tell a guest that they cannot take one are both unpleasant situations to be in.

4. Budget time for DIY projects. Often, people decide to make DIY centerpieces to add a bit of unique flare to their event. This is a fun and often less expensive way to go, but make sure you have enough time to commit to your project far enough in advance. If you are unable to finish your project, you may end up spending more money in the long run when you have to pay a florist or event planner or buy pre-made centerpieces at the last minute.

5. Be creative! Last but not least, don’t be afraid to use bright colors or unique objects in creating your centerpieces. They can be key pieces that make a great statement and liven up your event!
