“When the world bears down on me, will I laugh at its audacity, and be able to comprehend?” Cayetana’s Augusta Koch wonders on “Certain for Miles.” The second single from the Philly trio’s forthcoming album, New Kind of Normal, the track tones down Cayetana’s signature pop punk energy in a slower, contemplative nod to the anxiety caused by uncertainty and instability. As the band explained to Consequence of Sound, “this song is about trying to find strength and resilience in yourself when others fall short or can’t relate.” The song’s deliberate gravity makes it the perfect vehicle to convey Cayetana’s message. The heavy subject matter doesn’t weigh it down, though — Koch’s frustration becomes evident in her sharp-edged vocals as the song builds, and even in the midst of emotional distress, Cayetana manage to leave us with a tinge of hope and the assurance of solidarity.
