Casual Mini Skirts Outfits for Fall

I love jeans in the fall.  I wear them casually almost exclusively.  Given my lifestyle, I really don’t need to get much more dressed up than that, even when I am working.  However, what I am anticipating is by the end of winter I will be bored to tears with my rotating denim outfits.  I need some variety that is realistic for me.  Dresses are an option, and this fall I’d also like to add some skirts.  As far as styles go, I need to keep in mind several factors, all that might resonate with you as well.

First, I won’t wear heels when I am working unless they are super comfortable.  Given the fact that I am on my feet when I am with clients it’s just not practical for me to teeter around in a pair of pumps or heels that are too spindly, no matter how gorgeous they may be.  I need skirts that I can wear with flats making pencil skirts unworkable.  Pencil skirts rarely work with flats because they often need heels to look well proportioned on the body.  Second, pencil skirts are typically more corporate and less sporty.

I could check out fuller midi skirts, which are so popular like now, but, physically, for me, worn with flats I look like a hausfrau who should be milking cows on a mountainside somewhere.  Unless I add length to my heavy legs with heels it’s not a good look.

This sort of leaves me with mini skirts, which is fine.  I like mini skirts in the colder weather because I can wear them with tights and flats and look good.  They also make sense with my more sportier lifestyle where corporate looks aren’t necessary.

I am assuming I am not alone with all of these concerns.  I know a lot of clients who either won’t wear heels or don’t really have a need for them.  Plus, for more casual days, most women don’t want to wear heels beyond a stacked style.  If you are looking for more variety in your casual looks, take a look at these casual mini skirts outfits to get you started.

Outfit #1

This corduroy mini skirt from J. Crew has tremendous versatility.  It can easily be swapped in to replace your jeans and sweater looks, worn with classic button downs, and more.  Being in navy, it’s just as versatile as black skirt while not being so stark.

In the outfit above, I styled this skirt with a gray merino split neck turtleneck and tights in gray from Merona.   A color combination I love with gray and navy is cognac.  It’s very rich.  I finished this outfit with a pair of cognac boots from Frye and bag from Sole Society.  Lastly, I accented the look with stone faceted earrings from LOFT.

You don’t have to have perfect legs to wear mini skirts, I sure don’t.  The trick is to choose boots and tights that match in color to create a seamless leg line that not only elongates the look of your legs but makes them look slimmer.   In the outfit above, I choose these burgundy tights and booties from Nordstrom to achieve this.  The burgundy looks beautiful with a color like the camel in this skirt from Banana Republic.  I styled the look with this ivory blouse from Elie Tahari and accessorized with an olive bag from Elizabeth and James, a pendant from French Connection and faux leather bracelet in burgundy.

Outfit #3

This last look consists of a monochromatic neutral base that allows the tweed mini skirt from Boden to stand out.  I styled the skirt with this navy crew from J. Crew, tights from Falke, booties from Jack Rogers, bag from Rebecca Minkoff.  The outfit is finished with a pair of hoop earrings from Kate Spade and plaid scarf from Burberry.  I love how the large plaid and the tweed work together.

If you are looking for easy, casual skirts that you can wear with flat shoes and boots, check out mini skirts.  Remember, not all mini skirts are created the same.  Some minis will be super short and others will be more modest.  The key is to look at brands that cater to your comfort level of length to find a style that suits your needs.
