Cappo’s in Portage, Indiana

By Jessicanunemaker @JessNunemaker

Someone once told me that if you're traveling and don't know where to dine, pick the restaurant with all the police cars outside. You'll be sure to get home cooked food at a reasonable price.

Cappo's in Portage, Indiana is a favorite stop for police officers and residents alike because of the outstanding food, service and prices.

Cappo's in Portage, Indiana

The first time I ever dined at Cappo's was many years ago when I was crime reporter for a Porter County newspaper and met some Portage police officers there for an interview.

More recently, this well-known Porter County restaurant catered a picnic at Indiana Dunes Tourism, where I work, and we raved about the macaroni and cheese, eggplant parmesan and pizza.

So, I decided to visit the restaurant with my wife and sample a variety of dishes. The hostess provided a warm greeting when we entered Cappo's and our server was very attentive. We opted for a quiet booth, although we could have enjoyed a table by the restaurant's large aquarium.

I ordered the baked cod, which was tender and juicy and covered with a crispy breading. Since Cappo's is known for its pizzas, I ordered a small Mediterranean pizza, with olive oil, spinach, fresh garlic, black olives, tomatoes, feta cheese and the Cappo's cheese blend. It was wonderful!

My wife got the Build Your Own Burger, adding bacon and American cheese to the 1/2-pound Angus steak burger. She was impressed with both the burger and the taste of my pizza that she tried.

Just to confirm that we'd made the right decision to dine at Cappo's, a Porter County Sheriff's Department officer I know from my days as a crime reporter walked in for dinner with a fellow officer.
