Time is inevitable and unavoidable in all the ways we don’t want it to be. The mixed emotions about getting older, especially pervasive in adolescence, are explored in “Growing Up” by CANVAS. Though there’s a pervasive anxiety to the lyrics — “why should I be made to feel so young/and lost/alone/ I wanna feel proud/loved/and whole” — the peppy overtones of the guitar and open vowels of the lead singer bring a palpable excitement that carries through and adds a lightness to it all. Only their first song, it’s quite an impressive debut. Hopefully more will appear on their Soundcloud soon!
