Can Uluru Change Colour?

Posted on the 26 August 2021 by Violet Cowells @violetsvoyage

Uluru is the most recognisable natural landmark on earth. Millions of years old, and one of Australia’s greatest treasures.

Uluru

It is lovingly referred to as the red rock, being a brilliant rusty color in the dry landscape setting. But what is the cause of this colour, and does it really change color as the country says?

Uluru’s slow color development

Uluru wasn’t always red, once being a dull gray color back millions of years ago. The rock’s slow development of color was due to the surface being exposed to the water and oxygen for decades. This exposure has caused the minerals in the rock to oxidise, with the iron minerals found inside the arkose surface slowly rusting-leading to its iconic red colour!

Uluru’s Changing Colours

Uluru is famously known for changing its colours depending on the time of day. This phenomenal effect is due to the sunlight as it shines through the surrounding air of Uluru. As the sun moves through the sky, its sun rays reflect onto Uluru, from changing angles. These rays bounce up from the ground and onto the rock formation, which gives the illusion of it changing colours over an hour. This only occurs during the sunset and sunrise, as the moving sun is the key to the changing colours.

Why see Uluru at Sunrise

Though hundreds of people head to Uluru at every time of time, the sunrise and sunset are most popular. Many opt to choose the sunrise, heading to the red rock well before the sun starts to peek over the horizon. Setting up in the dark morning as the sky slowly turns from a dark black to a milky gray color to faded purple-until eventually the sun rises and enhances both Uluru’s colour, as well as the color of the surrounding region. Making for one of the most memorable mornings you will ever enjoy!

Why see Uluru at Sunrise

For many, a perfect end to a day of sightseeing is viewing the sunset at Uluru. Visitors can set up along the viewing section, even doing deluxe and enjoy a glass of sparkling on offer. Seeing the sunset over the horizon and alight the region with a soft pink glow, enhancing the brilliant red of the rock. This is great for couples, as it is truly one of the most romantic natural settings in all of Australia!
