Cake & Bake Show – London

By Tejal Hewitt @Tejal_x

So as most of you know ( who follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) that I was super excited about the Cake and Bake Show in London on October 5th, 2014. Myself and my 2 kids went down to london by train.

Kids and packed up a few things for our early start. Yes we caught the 8am train to London and got to Earls court just before 10.30am. However going to a food show I didn’t realize how much food was there! Mental note – next time skip the snacks and have more drinks instead. Drinks at Earls Court were rather expensive a small bottle of water and a diet Pepsi was well over £5!

We purchased the Show guide with the goodie bag which consisted of a Cake & Bake Show cotton bag, a Cake & Bake Show guide with details on the event and lots of recipes, Allinson Easy Bake Yeast sachet, Kenco instant Coffee sachet, Billington’s Caster Sugar and Renshaw’s Icing fondant with some sponsored leaflets.

At 11am we watched from a distance the Tom and Henry Herbert Fabulous Baker Brothers, this was a busy show and was rather difficult to see

As I forgot my Canon EOS DSLR most of the snaps were taking on my Iphone6. The cake displays were truly amazing some cakes just didn’t even look like cakes. The talent and design were amazing.

We sat down to watch the Mich Turner make a Chiffon cake in the Cake Kitchen, which was the first time I had seen one being made and was great to learn new tricks. surprisingly my son loved the demo too.

My daughters favorite bit about the show was the Billingtons #bakeface photo booth with a free cookie or brownie. It was a lot of fun pulling funny faces – but you have to be quick! It’s a competition so any one can enter – share your #bakeface at http://bakeface.billingtons.co.uk/ – we’ve entered! 2x!

We decided to watch the 3pm Competition Theatre Show with Frances, John, Edd and Jo (Previous winners of GBBO - Great British Bake off) on stage live battling in 2 teams for the best biscuits.

Fizz from Coronation Street was also at the GBBO competition. This was a great live show – and my son was picked to judge the cookies. Please see the video of the judging below

My son was in his element during the judging event – he did make me proud! As thank you – he received a box of Wright’s Baking Chocolate Sponge cake kit – which he wants to bake all by himself! I will have to do a post on this when he makes it!

We however did come home with some goodies…lots of goodies. Most Specially bought for the husband who missed out on this day trip. Other items not posted individually below include some cakes, brownies and cookies from different stalls, Billingtons Sugars and some freebies like aprons, recipe cards and loads of sample cakes, breads, chocolates and cookies!

Popcorn Kitchen was one of the bargains I picked up just as we were leaving – They were selling the small bags for £1 or 6 for £5 and the big bags at £2.5 or 6 for £10 – however they gave me 6 big bags and a woven bag all for a fiver! These came in a few different flavours and we picked Sweet Chilli, Sea Salt and olive oil, sweet and salty and Sweet.

These mini cup cakes were another bargain – during the event they were being sold by Cupcake.Co for £3.50 and just as we were leaving they were buy one get one free. So I indulged and picked up 2 boxes. The effect of the little egg boxes were a great idea. However they are plain vanilla cakes with coloured icing.

Macaroons – yummy almond biscuits! Yes you can’t go to bake show and not pick up a few of these bad boys. L’orchidee Boutique had some delicious and unique flavours, here below we have Creme Brulee, Red velvet, Passion fruit, Chocolate and Chocolate Orange. They almost made home in 1 piece!?!

Very early in the day, kids wanted some cake pops – and these cake Pops from The Baking tree were very good. They had samples of all the different ones they had and each one was great. They were selling kits, however I did make Cake Pops a few years ago for my daughters birthday. We purchased 4  ( kids ate 2 during the show), in the picture below is the red velvet and chocolate orange flavor. The kids had a chocolate and red velvet one.

As a novelty gift, we bought my husband a chocolate Screwdriver by Choco Passion Uk. This was such a cute little gift, however maybe too cute to eat!

I had my eye on these little indulgences all day from the Little Round Cake Company, so when we walked passed at the end I had to buy them specially since they were selling at 4 for £8 then reduced to 4 for £5! The meringues looked and tasted divine and my husband demolished the black forecast cake! Meringues as Strawberry white chocolate and milk chocolate, and cakes are Black forecast and nutella. The slice of cake was from a different stall!

All in all – this was a great day! I couldn’t fault it – actually a full day was definitely not long enough – I can see why people would buy a weekend ticket! I would definitely recommend a visit and I will go again in the future.
