Cage the Elephant has always had soul, but is bringing it out in a whole new way during the video for ”Take it or Leave it”, the second single off of Melophobia. Singer Matt Schultz and longtime friend and music video director, Isaac Rentz, instantly agreed on the 70s roller disco concept, and I don’t think anything could have fit better. Like much of the indie rock that came out last year, “Take it or Leave it” plucks along with a soulful, coordinating baseline and guitar riff while Schultz makes full use of his falsetto through the verses. The chorus reverts back to loud, gritty sounds with a blasting, light and summery rock hook.
In the video, roller disco girls and guys are decked out in bell-bottoms, short shorts and deep v-necks with fluffy hair as they glide gracefully across a wooden rink as the band lights up the stage in the middle. Between laser beams and shiny disco balls, the video effortlessly intertwines the professional skaters’ variety of dance moves and spinning tricks with close-ups of the band in their own 70s-inspired garb. It makes for an easy listen and a nostalgic trip back to the days when vests weren’t just a hipster trend.
