Nebraska’s 2013 quarterback recruiting situation went from one of panic to moderate comfort on Monday as Elite 11 quarterback Johnny Stanton committed to the Huskers.
The 6’2” 220-pound prospect out of Rancho Santa Margarita is one of likely two signal-callers to be taken this cycle and helps add talent to a depth chart that looked incredibly one-sided not long ago.
With Taylor Martinez having only two years of eligibility remaining, Tim Beck has to line up successors in a hurry. If sophomore Brion Carnes can’t make some magic of his own happen in 2012, expect current freshman Tommy Armstrong, Stanton and the aforementioned second quarterback commit to fight for the backup role in 2013.
A 2011 CIF Division I state title winner, Stanton threw for 2,439 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 1,528 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Perhaps one of the most interesting notes for Nebraska fans: Stanton had offers from Air Force, Navy and Oregon. All of these football programs are known for their use of option and dual-threat schemes.
The Huskers are very quietly building one of their best classes under Bo Pelini to date. If they continue at this rate and continue to pursue 2014 prospects hard, they’ll carry incredible momentum into February and beyond.
