I love birthdays and I love homemade gifts!! Especially when a friend shows me something they have seen and I can try and recreate it with a personalized touch.
My friend Shannon was recently at a craft show with her mom and saw a burlap canvas with a beautiful quote that reminded her of her late father. I knew immediately I would recreate it for her birthday in February!!
I chose the yellow ribbon, her and her dad’s favorite color! Shannon and her family loved the gift & even made requests with their favorite quotes for me to recreate
. It was a tedious process, so I may wait a while before making any other special gifts. Below is a tutorial for you to create your own painted burlap canvas.I used my favorite picture editing program, PicMonkey.com to type out the quote in different fonts and sizes. Now the difficult & tedious parts….using an Exacto knife to cut out each curly letter! I had to pry my latched fingers off the Exacto knife after about 4 hours. I know what you are thinking…I need a Cricut or Silhouette. Well that is definitely on my wish list & would have made this project a million times easier. I have linked the websites, just in case anyone is feeling generous!
I used straight pins to hold the letters in place while I traced them with a black Sharpie.
I colored all of the letters in with a Sharpie and wasn’t pleased with the look. I knew paint would give me the effect I wanted, however the small script would be difficult with a paintbrush. Hannah, that clever sister of mine, suggested a paint pen so that I could still get the paint effect with the precision of a marker.
I am really excited that Shannon loved it so much and to give a gift that has such a special meaning. If you love burlap projects check out my Hometalk & Michael’s Pinterest Party post HERE. And check out those bowling shoes in the picture above
